To grow a perfect, full, healthy beard, we all wish it was as easy as waiting a few months for the hair to simply grow.

However, if its picture-perfect quality you’re looking for, there’s a lot more to maintaining a beard than that. In fact, if you don’t care for your facial hair, it’s likely it will become patchy, dry, and stop growing in length all together.

Luckily, achieving that perfect beard is not a difficult task once you understand what makes your facial hair tick.

Like the hair on your head, your beard needs to be cleaned and maintained properly.

The best way to get your beard looking and feeling healthy is to begin to use beard oils, which are comprised of two primary ingredients: carrier oils and essential oils.

What is a beard oil?

The two primary ingredients in a quality beard oil will be crucial to keeping a healthy beard.

Carrier oils act as a rejuvenator, stimulating your hair follicles to grow, as well as keeping your skin beneath the beard moisturized. These carrier oils are conveniently included in the ingredients of most common hair care products including quality shaving creams, natural shampoos and conditioners.

The secondary ingredient, essential oils, provides the photo finish to your beard. Naturally containing antiseptic properties, these oils keep the skin acne and fungus free.

The variety of essential oils provide other benefits as well including increased blood flow, which will allow the hair to grow more.

The most common essential oils found in beard oils derive from chamomile (relieves dry, itchy skin), cinnamon (stimulates hair growth) tea tree oil (moisturizes and slows hair loss), rosemary (treats dandruff), vanilla (stimulates hair growth) and citrus (sanitizes skin).

These helpful essential oils also give beard oils their alluring scent.

Many of these specific scents and remedies can be found in the beard oils by Brott’s Beard Care.

Why do beard oils work?

Often times people forget that your skin is an organ and has to be cared for, just as you would care for your heart and lungs.

The entire surface of your skin contains microscopic glands called sebaceous glands, which are usually attached to hair follicles.

These glands provide the body’s natural production of oils, called sebum oil, to maintain moisture in your skin. It is common when facial hair is a thin layer, the body’s production of oil can manage the maintenance of the hair and the skin beneath it.

However, as your beard grows in length, your body struggles to produce enough sebum oil.

When this happens, it’s common for your beard growth to slow, skin irritation to manifest, and the beard will become dry and cracked.

When you begin to use beard oil, it acts as a support to your natural production of sebum oil so you can maintain a healthy beard.

What differences will beard oils make?

One of the biggest complaints of an unhealthy beard is the dry, itchy skin that exists beneath it.

This phenomenon is known as beardruff.

The facial hair’s equivalent to dandruff, it can be not only uncomfortable but embarrassing to have flakes of skin tangled in your beard.

The use of carrier and essential oils will prevent and treat beardruff, all the while keeping the hair itself soft and smooth.

The use of beard oil provides a visible difference for wiry, spit ends in the beard, and will also treat the beard follicle, allowing you to grow your beard softer and longer. As if beard oils already didn’t help tremendously, they are responsible for the smells we all love, like the rustic smell of cedar wood and pine.

How do I use beard oil?

Beard oils are perhaps one of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain a healthy beard.

All it takes is a dime-sized amount in the palm of your hand.

Rub the oil between your hands, and work it into your beard from the base of the beard to the tips.

Use your fingertips to rub the oils into your mustache as well should you have one.

It takes less than a minute, and depending on the severity of your symptoms (such as beardruff or stunted hair growth), you may only need to apply every other day.
