How the Ingredients in Beard Oil Take Your Grooming Game to the Next Level ~ Shawn Burns, Founder of Tools of Men
To grow a perfect, full, healthy beard, we all wish it was as easy as waiting a few months for the hair to simply grow.
However, if its picture-perfect quality you’re looking for, there’s a lot more to maintaining a beard than that. In fact, if you don’t care for your facial hair, it’s likely it will become patchy, dry, and stop growing in length all together.
Luckily, achieving that perfect beard is not a difficult task once you understand what makes your facial hair tick.
Like the hair on your head, your beard needs to be cleaned and maintained properly.
The best way to get your beard looking and feeling healthy is to begin to use beard oils, which are comprised of two primary ingredients: carrier oils and essential oils.
What is a beard oil?
The two primary ingredients in a quality beard oil will be crucial to keeping a healthy beard.
Carrier oils act as a rejuvenator, stimulating your hair follicles to grow, as well as keeping your skin beneath the beard moisturized. These carrier oils are conveniently included in the ingredients of most common hair care products including quality shaving creams, natural shampoos and conditioners.
The secondary ingredient, essential oils, provides the photo finish to your beard. Naturally containing antiseptic properties, these oils keep the skin acne and fungus free.
The variety of essential oils provide other benefits as well including increased blood flow, which will allow the hair to grow more.
The most common essential oils found in beard oils derive from chamomile (relieves dry, itchy skin), cinnamon (stimulates hair growth) tea tree oil (moisturizes and slows hair loss), rosemary (treats dandruff), vanilla (stimulates hair growth) and citrus (sanitizes skin).
These helpful essential oils also give beard oils their alluring scent.
Many of these specific scents and remedies can be found in the beard oils by Brott’s Beard Care.
Why do beard oils work?
Often times people forget that your skin is an organ and has to be cared for, just as you would care for your heart and lungs.
The entire surface of your skin contains microscopic glands called sebaceous glands, which are usually attached to hair follicles.
These glands provide the body’s natural production of oils, called sebum oil, to maintain moisture in your skin. It is common when facial hair is a thin layer, the body’s production of oil can manage the maintenance of the hair and the skin beneath it.
However, as your beard grows in length, your body struggles to produce enough sebum oil.
When this happens, it’s common for your beard growth to slow, skin irritation to manifest, and the beard will become dry and cracked.
When you begin to use beard oil, it acts as a support to your natural production of sebum oil so you can maintain a healthy beard.
What differences will beard oils make?
One of the biggest complaints of an unhealthy beard is the dry, itchy skin that exists beneath it.
This phenomenon is known as beardruff.
The facial hair’s equivalent to dandruff, it can be not only uncomfortable but embarrassing to have flakes of skin tangled in your beard.
The use of carrier and essential oils will prevent and treat beardruff, all the while keeping the hair itself soft and smooth.
The use of beard oil provides a visible difference for wiry, spit ends in the beard, and will also treat the beard follicle, allowing you to grow your beard softer and longer. As if beard oils already didn’t help tremendously, they are responsible for the smells we all love, like the rustic smell of cedar wood and pine.
How do I use beard oil?
Beard oils are perhaps one of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain a healthy beard.
All it takes is a dime-sized amount in the palm of your hand.
Rub the oil between your hands, and work it into your beard from the base of the beard to the tips.
Use your fingertips to rub the oils into your mustache as well should you have one.
It takes less than a minute, and depending on the severity of your symptoms (such as beardruff or stunted hair growth), you may only need to apply every other day.

Choosing the right beard oil and scent may seem like a challenge, but Brott’s Beard Care offers a variety of oils and treatments, including a sample 3 pack of different natural oils, which is sure to help you decide which one you love.

Although we thought that the beard boom was bound to end and disappear the same way it appeared a couple of years ago, men with fabulous facial hair continue to prove us wrong. This is the reason why everyone has at least one close bearded man in their life; a father, a brother, best friend, partner, you name it. The fact that The Beard became a brand of its own led to a unique style attached to it and to the development of a specific market for bearded men. This makes your job a whole lot easier. In case you still don’t have an idea what to buy to your special bearded men, here are a few good ones.
Yep, this is a thing. The most popular beards today are far more complicated than the “I didn’t shave for three days” style, and in order to look good, they need to be combed and taken care of. Nothing looks worse than a messy beard à la Robinson Crusoe, so your bearded friend will know how to appreciate this gift. However, you should avoid plastic brushes and combs, since they can cause frizz and static. Handmade wood comb is always a better option.
We mentioned before the boom of beard-related products. Here’s one of the most popular, and deservedly so. You should know natural beard oil makes the beard softer, easier to manage and hydrated, all at once. You can choose from various scents and properties, but some of the finest are pine tar, citrus and spice, and timber. Or you don’t have to choose at all. Just buy a cute three samples pack, wrap it up and voila.
Sometimes a beard can have “a mind of its own” and when that happens every hair is going its own way, and it is never the way you want them to go. This can be truly annoying for a bearded fella, so help him to solve this problem with the best beard tamer there is – an all natural beard balm or wax. A multi functional product, such as balm and conditioner combo is even better option.
There is no match like a well-nourished beard and a fine stylish suit. In fact, if the man you’re buying a gift for is less of a lumberjack and more of a proper gentleman, then you should look for the gift in dapper men’s suits department. Depending on his preferences the style can range from classical black and navy to quirky checkered suit.
A Plaid Shirt
Let’s face it, whether we like it or not, lumberjack style is here to stay, and if you can’t beat them, it is best to join them. A fierce plaid shirt for a fierce manly man will always be a great present. If your bearded fella is into smart casual look, it’s about time to get him a shirt like this.
Statement t-shirts about the importance of beards can be found on each corner. They make quite an interesting and funny gift, especially for younger guys. Search for truly humorous statements such as “If Your Dad Doesn’t Have a Beard, You Have Two Moms”, “With great beard comes great responsibility”, "No Shave Life", etc.
A Beard Trimmer
Some bearded guys would rather die than shave, but hey, they all must trim their facial hair sometimes. Trimmers are the best tools for shaping the beard, but only if you buy a quality piece. Besides a powerful blade and a number of extensions, a good trimmer will have a vacuum function and sleek design.
An Old-Fashioned Straight Razor
Sometimes old means evergreen instead of dated, and there are men who would appreciate such a classic, and dare we say – classy gift. The best thing about an old-fashioned straight razor is not its nostalgic feel, but also its ability to shape a larger beard.
When buying a gift for a bearded guy, you have to be aware that his top priority is his facial hair, which makes finding the right gift much easier. Keep in mind that beard grooming is essential for every modern beard, so good luck searching through the ever growing beard-lovin’ market.

I am often asked to explain the difference between Beard Oil and Beard Balm, as well as, give advice on which one someone should use. As always I will share what works best for me, along with some general guidelines that I have learned from other bearded men. To begin, here are some basic characteristics of each.
Based on the characteristics listed above you should now be able to decide which one works best for you. If you are still unsure, experiment until you find your routine.
For me, I have found that I like the results of using both products together. I apply the beard oil right after showering when the pores of my skin are open and the beard hair is damp. This will result in better absorption and a less greasy beard. After a minute or two, I apply the beard balm and use my comb or brush to get the desired shape.
Most of the time I encourage people to start with a great beard oil, and as the beard grows out, add a balm to the beard care regimen. Ultimately, there is no right or wrong answer as long as you are doing something to take care of your beard.

I imagine most of you reading this are familiar with the concept of Social Responsibility, and some of you might even make your buying decisions based on companies that practice this belief. Investopedia defines it as “the idea that a company should embrace its social responsibilities and not be solely focused on maximizing profits.” Examples of how companies can put this into practice are: Creating one for one programs, donating a portion of sales to an organization or charity, developing outreach programs in the local community, and reducing the negative impact their businesses have on the environment.
As a consumer, I have a come across a number of companies that exemplify social responsibility, and thus have been inspired to model my business after them. Two of my favorites are Toms and Bombas, both have created unique one for one programs that provide desperately needed items and services to people in need. Please visit their sites to learn more about the amazing things they are doing.
As a bearded man and owner of a beard care business, it made perfect sense for me to seek out an organization that focuses on men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. With a little help from CharityWatch and some additional research of my own, I currently make an ongoing contribution, by donating a portion of all sales, to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. As the business grows, so will our contributions, and so will my desire to find additional ways to operate a more socially responsible business. I welcome any ideas you have on how we can be better. I also encourage you to find ways to be more socially responsible by donating to your favorite cause, volunteering your time, being environmentally conscious, or supporting business that are giving back.

I speak with people regarding beard care almost every day, and most of them use beard oil or, at the very least, are familiar with it. The one thing that varies with each of the bearded men that I come into contact with is the way they are using their beard oil. I’m not going to tell you that one way is better than another, because ultimately what works best for you, is what’s best for you. I will share the method that I use and give you my reasoning behind it. Here are the very simple steps to getting the most from your beard oil.
If you haven’t applied your beard oil right after showering, I encourage you to give it a try. The reasoning behind this method is that the shower will open the pores of your face and allow the oil to better absorb and nourish the skin under your facial hair. Also, when beard oil is applied to damp beard hair it will help to seal and lock in the moisture. By making this little adjustment to your beard care routine, you will notice that your beard is softer, your skin is moisturized, and the oil will absorb much better, resulting in a beard that doesn’t feel oily.
I hope this helps you get the most from your beard oil. If you have any tips that work for you please share them in the comments. If you are looking for a great beard oil, please click here.
